Although some of the restaurants which are located on the 'walled' part of the city could be considered as tourist traps (95% of the 'tourists' were Italian anyway), they still all delivered amazing fresh seafood, pizza and pasta. I was highly impressed by the selection, and here is just a few of the ones which I enjoyed and recommend.
Mabrouk
Via Santa Barbara | Centro Storico, Alghero, Sardinia, Italy
I would really suggest making a reservation at Mabrouk. There is no menu to choose from and you are served whatever is caught fresh on the day; a perfect arrangement for any restaurant by the sea. This added excitement to the meal. With at least six different dishes which included cold Sardinian starters on arrival, followed by fresh seafood pasta both ravioli and linguine, seafood risotto, grilled prawns, grilled whole fish served with potatoes, calamari friti and dessert, this has to be one of the best value for money dinners at just 40Euros per head, including house wine and beer. Not only that, it was absolutely amazing. Everything was super fresh, perfectly seasoned and there was loads of it! The service was attentive and welcoming. We rolled out of there after a few hours, but not before having a shot of Mirto with the wonderful owner. An absolute must go!
Ristorante Aquatica Marina Club
Banchina Sanita | Porto di Alghero, 07041 Alghero, Sardinia, Italy
This restaurant is situated on the harbour of Alghero, right
on the water with fantastic views. We arrived with no reservations at around
9pm (although I would suggest trying to make a reservation), and were able to
be seated inside by the window. The restaurant is very open and airy with white table cloths. We were
presented with a selection of fresh fish of the day on a tray, which
included a giant lobster. The service was excellent, and the seafood was fresh and tasty.
I would suggest ordering a side salad with the catch of the day fish as the
white meat does become quite repetitive. The steak was slightly on the cold side when brought out, but cooked as ordered. Overall however a good place to go.

Trattoria Al Refettorio
Carrero del Porxo (Vicolo Adami) n. 47, 07041 Alghero,
Sardinia, Italy
This restaurant is hidden down an alley way in the old town.
The best thing about the location is the outdoor seating which is situated
underneath a long archway, making the setting quite romantic. Inside was empty, however I would suspect
that this is the case for most restaurants in Alghero during summer. The
service was swift, although in some places patchy but overall quite good as we
stayed till nearly midnight while having after dinner drinks. The seafood pasta
was slightly lacking the promised seafood, however the flavours were fresh and
robust. The muscle soup was also good, however I preferred the one from Kings
Restaurant (below). This restaurant is a good option if you are staying for a week. Most Restaurants in Alghero are all genuinely good,
you will not be disappointed if you come here, however you won’t be overwhelmed
either.
King’s Restaurant
Via Cavour 123 | Bastioni Marco Polo 5, 07041 Alghero, Sardinia, Italy
King's Restaurant is located on the 'Wall' with stunning views and it was mostly excellent. The service was attentive, and the dishes creative fresh and local. The muscle soup in particular was perfectly seasoned and the muscles very fresh. In fact, they were some of the best muscles I have had in a long time. We also shared a lobster pasta between three, and although the pasta was perfectly al’dante and the flavours rich and satisfying, there were loads of shell pieces all throughout the dish. A very dangerous and unprofessional oversight from the kitchen.
Ristorante Pizzeria "Les
Monges"
Via
Sant'Erasmo 14, 07041 Alghero, Sardinia, Italy
This is a great pizza restaurant, however if you have pizza
they will not let you sit overlooking the harbour. This is a small price to pay
as there is still seating alfresco style just a few steps down. There are loads
of a la carte choices, however from my experience the pizza is the best
choice. The staff are super friendly and are more than willing to suggest
places for night life around Alghero.

Where to stay
We rented a private let apartment with a company called Magic Orange. It was situated right in the old town and was perfectly equipped. Polly, our contact, was very friendly and ensured we were happy and had everything we needed. I have seen two apartments from Magic Orange and both were perfectly clean and in a great location. Staying in the old town will give you a real sense of the culture in Alghero, I highly recommend, even though the kids in the streets can be slightly loud.
Food is one of the keys to achieving an enjoyable holiday. Thank you for these fine restaurant reviews. Perhaps you can do some reviews too on Sardinia hotels on your next blog. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment, and you are welcome :)
DeleteI only write about what I experience hence the quick blurb of the apartment where we stayed (which was brilliant by the way). However, would LOVE to go back to Sardinia and perhaps next time I will :) - any suggestions?
